My personal top 10 favorite Broadway musicals.

#10: West Side Story. A Romeo & Juliet story with a modern twist. Stephen Sondheim had an amazing start with writing the lyrics to this, along with the amazing music by Leonard Bernstein. I know quite a lot of the music when I was younger, but I haven't seen the musical until 8th grade, when I got the movie for Christmas.

#9: The Sound of Music. This was a childhood favorite. I saw the musical for the first time at the Paper Mill Playhouse when I was in 2nd grade, and it basically became my obsession all throughout that year, and not to mention it was where my obsession with musical theatre all began. It was unfortunate that this was Rodgers and Hammerstein's final collab musical, but they did make it their best.

#8: Hairspray. For most musical theater kids around my age, Hairspray was the first rock musical we were ever introduced to, and I was no exception. I was obsessed with this musical when I was in 6th grade. The music was amazing, I would listen to the soundtrack all the time, I'd watch the movie whenever I get the chance, and I remembered seeing it on Broadway in 6th grade.

#7: Jekyll & Hyde. If you saw some of my artwork and journals, you saw this coming. I was in my school's production of it sophomore year, and it was probably the best musical production (in fact, production period) that I've ever been in. Words cannot describe how much I loved being in this musical. It was also my school's marching band theme this year (and I was unfortunately not in the band, sad). Since it's going to have a revival on Broadway in 2013, I'm going to beg my mom to get tickets to see it.

#6: Chicago. John Kander and Fred Ebb did a lot of amazing collab musicals over the years. But if I had to pick my favorite, it would be Chicago. Great music, great storyline, great characters, you get the picture. Not to mention that I will always hold on to the fact that Velma Kelly is one of my dream roles.

#5: Sweeney Todd. I'm a huge fan of Stephen Sondheim's work, but my favorite Sondheim musical has to be Sweeney Todd. It's dark, it's edgy, and it's suspenseful. I like those kind of things. I even remember singing the musical medley as the combined piece in chorus for the Fall Concert freshman year (I was super excited to sing it).

#4: Les Miserables. If you saw my 8th installment of Total Drama Sings Animaniacs, you'd know that I'm a huge fan of Les Mis. It's an amazing musical, and I'm obsessed with the music. If you're a musical theatre fan and you don't know the music (though I'm sure that most of you do), do yourselves a favor, and look it up on YouTube. I heard that the film adaptation is coming out later this year, and I can't wait to see it.

#3: RENT. Jonathan Larson... Y U have to die so young? Yes, I'll admit it. I'm a RENThead and I think Jonathan Larson is a fucking genius. A group of young artists and musicians in New York City struggling to survive HIV and AIDS? Clever storyline. The music? FUCKING AWESOME! Not to mention it was the musical that taught me what and when World AIDS day is. If I was in a production of RENT as Mimi, then my life would be complete. (Please don't question the fact that most of my dream roles are whores). It's funny though, I knew some the music when I was only in 5th or 6th grade, but I haven't seen the actual musical (the movie actually) until my freshman year. My school's director actually tried to get our spring musical to be RENT for two years, but we could never get it approved. It really sucks that the best musicals are either still on Broadway (so high schools can't get the rights to them... I'M LOOKING AT YOU, STARKID! WHEN WILL YOU SELL THE RIGHTS TO A VERY POTTER MUSICAL!?!? Sorry about that, back to the REAL topic) or they're "too mature" for high school.

#2: Phantom of the Opera. Oh my god, where do I star with Phantom? Well, first off, IT'S FUCKING AMAZING!!!! Personally, I'm not that big of a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber, but this has to be his best work. With a great storyline and memorable music, it's no wonder that it's currently the longest running musical in Broadway history. I also just noticed that I have the exact same vocal range as what Christine should have (well that gives me an advantage for my future career on Broadway). This is a must-see for any musical theatre fan like myself.

#1: Wicked. NOW I seriously don't know where to start with this. I swear to god, this is the best musical ever (men may disagree, but with quite a lot of exceptions, they don't know a thing about musical theatre when they see it). I think having a storyline that revolves around the witches of Oz when they were teens was phenominal, and the music? Let me just say that I absolutely ADORE Stephen Schwartz. If you saw some of my artwork, you'd know how much of a Wicked fangirl that I am. I saw the musical for my 16th birthday (I happy-cried when my mom told me she got the tickets). The Wizard of Oz is one of my favorite movies, so I thought it was awesome to see another side of the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba). The character development was just amazing and it really told what The Wizard of Oz hasn't. To sum it all up, it's amazing and I recommend that if you're a female musical theatre fan, go see it. And if you have a boyfriend, drag them to see it just to piss them off.

Honorable Mentions: The Music Man, Into the Woods, Hair, Avenue Q, Funny Girl, Once Upon a Mattress, Sweet Charity, The Wedding Singer, Finian's Rainbow, Annie, Bye Bye Birdie, Next to Normal, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Spring Awakening, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid, Newsies, Godspell, The Book of Mormon, The King and I, Big River, Oklahoma, South Pacific, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Grease, Gypsy, Once, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors, Chess, Cabaret, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Seussical, Rock of Ages, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, My Fair Lady, Pippin, Urinetown, Billy Elliot, Sunday in the Park with George, Oliver, Dreamgirls, La Cage Aux Folles, Annie Get your Gun, The Drowsy Chaperone, Singin in the Rain, A Chorus Line, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly, Anything Goes, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Anyone Can Whistle, A Little Night Music

rent is a complicated one for me becasue I LOVE the music and apreciate what it's trying to do but god damn it the charaters.  I want to like them I really do but they come off as the kind fo pretencious atrist who sneers at non artests while preaching a message of being yourself and blmes everone but themselves for the povety that  is(in a rare case for poverty) largly  their  fault.  it would be so bad if the show acknoged that they were horrible(like Chicago dose) or if they  tryed to get out of their situation at al but they dont, it's like expect people to just give them success because they are "different". I havent seen the show in ages so I might be missing someting  there but at the momnet ...ya. there also the kinda  probimatic reperestion of bisexual charaters but it was the 90s so even including a bisexual character is near on a miricle so i can get past that. I'm not trying to bash the musical I do like it ,  like i said the msic is incridble and the premice is great but it's just d to love somting if you dont like the characters

I can relate to the highs school thing thouh, god is that annoying
